Who are we?
We are all volunteers, brought together by our enjoyment of the Trans Pennine Trail, and keen to put something back into it. Working closely with Sustrans, BMBC, and the TPT office, we hold workdays on the Trail between Penistone and Dunford Bridge, on
the first Saturday and at least two weekdays (usually Wednesdays) each month
. If you like being outdoors and would enjoy working alongside others to improve the Trail, then why not come along to one of our workdays and see what we do? If you would like to become involved in the organisation or running of the group and have skills to offer, please get in touch.
What kind of work do you do?
Between October and the end of February we concentrate mainly on pruning the trees, bushes, and overhanging branches which encroach upon the Trail. From March to August (during the nesting season) we look at everything which makes the Trail an attractive, and safe, environment. As well as working to maintain five wild flower areas, this also includes painting, cleaning, litter-removal etc. etc. We're very much concerned with supporting wildlife and enhancing the biodiversity of the Trail, and are part of
Sustrans Greener Greenways project
We are also involved with
to enhance the Trail for its users. Most recently we installed wild flower posts to alert everyone to the wonderful wild flowers to be found along the Trail and created a Magic Woodland area at the side of the Trail, for children to explore. We've made picnic sites and installed information panels along the route, and worked with
to produce a leaflet about this section of the Trail, and large scale maps for Penistone town centre.
Do you organise Corporate Workdays?
supports corporate workdays. We run events for groups of up to twenty, involving a variety of activities; please get in touch with us and let us know your requirements.
Do I need any experience?
No previous experience is necessary; we will make sure you understand what you are doing and give you the tools and training to carry it out. Most tasks are very simple and require a minimum of expertise - you will be working alongside others, at your own pace, and with plenty of breaks during the day.
Can I bring children?
Children are very welcome on our workdays, on the express understanding that they must work under the direct supervision of the responsible adult who accompanies them.
Would I have to come every month? Can I come for part of the day?
It's entirely up to you how often you come, and how long you stay; some people come each time for the whole day; some just occasionally or for part of the day.
Do I have to let you know in advance if I am coming?
There is no need to let us know you are coming, just turn up on the day at the place and time advertised (see the
if you are unsure about any of the details or have other queries.
What should I bring?
Work gloves if you have them; waterproof gloves are recommended if the weather has been wet, with an inner pair of gloves if it's very cold.
Stout (waterproof if wet) footwear. Plenty of room in your boots, and two pairs of socks, will keep your feet warm in the winter.
Waterproofs - make sure your waterproofs really are waterproof; it's very easy to get cold once you're wet.
Lunch - we supply free tea, coffee, fruit juice and biscuits in the morning and afternoon
We're happy for you to bring your own tools (in good condition) if you prefer. A bow saw and a pair of loppers is all you're likely to need, and you may want to mark them so that you can easily identify them.
I'm not very practical - but I'd like to make a donation.
